Aim
To inspire children to discover, understand, love, and protect the nature through searching and recording various sounds of the nature.
Introduction
As the nature becomes increasing farther away from us, to listen to twitters of birds and sounds of small rivers have become a luxurious wish of people in the city. When green forests are gradually replaced by rising skyscrapers, and children in the city could only understand wild animals in their books, what will be the nature in children’s eyes?
From April to November, 2006, the activity “Recording of Sound of the Nature by Children in the Capital City” themed at “Understand the Nature, Approach the Nature, and Protect the Nature” was jointly organized by the Artistic Channel of Beijing People’s Radio and Trumpet Program of China National Radio, and over 1,000 children from Beijing took part in the activity. By searching and recording the natural sounds, children deepened their understanding of the nature and realized the importance of the environmental protection.
This program has made full use of the original sound materials recorded by children and truly reflected the process of children in exploring the nature, recognizing the nature, and understanding the nature as well as their love of the nature and desire for protecting the nature.
The program takes the natural sounds recorded by children as the main sound, making it more real and interesting for audience. In the meantime, it is also an important way to invite children to participate in radio broadcasting in person, thus to enhance their interest of radio in this era of internet.
Sound of the Nature

Xu Ke: Hello, hello! I’m Xu Ke. I’m nine years old now. I come from Beijing Primary School.
Mother: Hello! Hello!
Xu Ke: Hello! Hello! Mum, has it been recorded?
[Sound of trembling leaves … Birds twittering …]
Xu Ke: This is the sound of trembling leaves…
[Sound of trembling leaves …]
[Sound of water birds recorded near the lake in the zoo …]
Xu Ke: Listen, this is the twitters of mandarin ducks.
[Twittering of water birds...]
Xu Ke: Hey, here comes the wild duck.
[Water birds contend for whistling...]
Xu Ke: So interesting.
[Whistling fades out...]
Host: Hi, my friends, these are the sounds of the nature recorded by Xu Ke. Do you like them? Are there any different sounds in the nature? If you are the recorder, what would you record?
[Record of interview 1:
Xiao Yu: What do you know are the sounds of the nature?
Yu Yiyang: Animals’ calls, and sounds of wind and rain.
Xu Ke: Yes, animals’ calls.
Yu Yiyang: Sound of waterfall and flowing water.
Xiao Yueyang: And also ostrich.
Yu Yiyang: Animals in the sea.
Xu Ke: I was wondering if the blooming of flowers would make any sound.
Yu Yiyang: Yes, of course.
Xiao Yu: What is the sound like?
Yu Yiyang: People’s exclamations... Wah...
Also, the sound of falling leaves, also a natural sound. ]
[Record of interview 2:
Xiao Yu: What have you recorded?
Xiao Yueyang: I’ve recorded the sound of parrot.
(Twittering of parrot...)
Yu Yiyang: We’ve recorded peacock.
(Clucks of peacock...)
Yu Yiyang: Mynah.
(Twittering of mynah...)
Xu Ke: I particularly want to record the twitters of that flamingo. Listen, it twitters!
(Twittering of flamingo...)
Yu Yiyang: We’ve recorded chickens.
(Clucks of chickens...)
Yu Yiyang: I love the birds’ chirps near that big lake, so vivid and sweet.
(Imitate chirps exaggeratedly) Ji, Ji….
(Chirps of many birds … fade out…)]
[Record of interview 3:
Xiao Yu: Which animal’s sound do you like most?
Yang Ruiyuan: Cat, meow, meow…woo…
Xiao Yu: (Laugh) why it lasts so long?
Yang Ruiyuan: Because our cat is hungry.
(Meow...) ]
Boy: I’ve recorded my dog’s bark.
[Dog’s bark...]
[Crickets' chirp...]
Girl: I think cricket’s sound is also a sound of the nature. That night, my father and I squatted on the grass and recorded this sound.
[Crickets' chirp...]
Boy: I’ve recorded the chirps of some small insects, but I didn’t see them.
[Chirps of insects in the grass...]
Girl: What I’ve recorded is the cheeps of chicks.
[Cheeps of chicks...]
Boy: Elephant!
Girl: Come here, elephant!
[Moo of elephant...]
Boy: When I came to the zoo last time, I saw a tiger attack its prey. Roar… I recorded it.
[Roar of tiger...]
Boy: I’ve recorded the cry of bear.
[Bear’s cry...]
Boy: I’ve recorded the squeak of golden monkey.
[Squeak of golden monkey...]
Boy: I’ve recorded the sound of rain.
[Sound of rain...]
[Sound of sea tide...]
Boy: I’ve recorded the sound of sea in Qinhuang Island in summer holiday.
[Sound of sea tide...]
Host: Hi, friends, have you heard these sounds? They’ve really spend much time and energy in recording the sounds of the nature.
[Crows’ crowing...]
Yu Yiyang: (8 years old, Class 2, Grade 2 of Yuxin Primary School) Come on, make some sound, come on. These birds pretend to be a lady.
[Clear crow of the crows...]
Yu Yiyang: Oh my god.
[Clear crow of the crows...]
Yu Yiyang: Oh... hey...
[Clear crow of the crows...]
Yu Yiyang: Horrible, I’d never get close to it.
Yu Yiyang: That day when we were recording the sound of swan, those crows flew around us and crowed happily as if we were recording their cries. I think their sounds are also pleasant, so I’ve record a lot of them.
[Quacks of ducks and swans...]
[Chirps of birds...]
Gao Siyuan: (Class 1, Grade 3 of Qijiahuozi Primary School) I was recording the birds’ chirps and suddenly slid down the slope. No problem for me, because the recording was so interesting, and sometimes it was not so easy. I didn’t know how to record sound, my daddy told me. I became familiar with the recorder after several tries.
Shang Hongbo: (11 years old, Grade 5 of Huajiadi Primary School) I’ve recorded the cheeps of sparrows. I think they are the real wild animals in the city. But their sounds are difficult to record because when you get close to them, they will fly away. And sometimes, there are people and cars passing by, and their noise would cover the little sound of sparrows.
[Cheeps of sparrows...]
Liu Jing: (11 years old, Grade 4 of Baiyunlu Primary School) That day, two water birds were chirping just in front of me, and many littler birds were singing on the tree. Then there came a peacock making several whistles. I was so delighted because these birds supported each other in such a perfect manner. Their sounds were so sweet.
[Croaks of frogs...]
Li Tao: (10 years old, Grade 4 of Changping No.1 Primary School) What I’ve recorded are the croaks of frogs. That day we heard some frogs were croaking in a small river. We decided to come closer to them silently. But just before we got to them, they discovered us and jumped into the water and disappeared. Then we hid ourselves near the river and waited for a long time before they came out again.
[Croaks of frogs...]
Host: Audience, do you know how long has Qin Zhen waited in Beijing Zoo for recording the sounds of pelican and monkey?
[Sound effect of a zoo...]
Qin Zhen: There was a big pelican. I wanted to record its sound.
[Twitters of pelican...]
Qin Zhen: Pelican’s twitter sounds like the laughing of people. After that, we came to Monkey Mountain. We waited there for a long time, but no monkey squeaked.
[Squeaks of monkey...]
Qin Zhen: Suddenly, disputes arouse among several monkeys, and squeaks came out. I was so happy that I almost jumped up.
Host: In recording the sounds, some children succeeded and some failed. No matter they are successful or not, they’ve found happiness in looking for the sound of the nature.
Liu Mengtian: (12 years old, Class 3, Grade 6 of Yumin Primary School) I’ve recorded the sound of flowing water in streams. Actually, in the beginning I wanted to record the sound of water in the river. But when I reached the river near my home, it was so silent, and no sound of water could be recorded. Then my father took me to the suburb, there we saw a long stream, so we went close to it. It was shallow and clean, and the water was brisk. So I took out my recorder and recorded the sound of the happy stream. Now you can listen to it…
[Sound of flowing water...]
[Sound of thunder storm...]
Lei Wanting: (10 years old, Grade 3 of Jindian Primary School) I’m Lei Wanting. What I’ve recorded is the sound of a thunder storm. That day I was sleeping, and suddenly a big thunder awakened me. I felt the sound was so impressive, so I took my recorder to record it. Three minutes later, I came back to my room. I think the sound of wind, rain and lightning can help us better understand the nature.
Wu Zheng: (8 years old, Grade 2 of Wuluyuan Primary School) We were in the zoo and saw Latin America tapirs, South America tapirs, raccoons, and foxes. But we didn’t record any sound because foxes seldom cry and raccoons were sleeping then.
[Calls of penguins...]
Host: Friends, do you know which animal makes this kind of calls? Okay, let me tell you, these are the calls of penguins recorded by Dai Jialin.
Dai Jialin: (11 years old, the Affiliated Primary School of Dongcheng Normal School) We particularly want to record penguin’s sound. They normally live in the South Pole area, but we can see them in Beijing in a cold big house. in the beginning, we couldn’t hear any sound of penguins because we were separated from them by glass. So we asked a feeder for help, but he wouldn’t let us into the penguins’ room. After a long time talk, he still didn’t change his mind. We almost cried. He found we were so determined, he said we might record the sound of penguins outside the watching window of feeders. It was a very small window for feeders to watch the activities of penguins. The penguins were so cute, and we recorded their sound successfully.
Host: Okay, let’s listen to this precious record once again. It’s special, isn’t it?
[Calls of penguins...]
Host: Friends, in the nature, beside those beautiful sounds such as twitters of birds, calls of animals, sounds of flowing water and tides of the sea, we may also hear some horrible sounds made by tsunami, earthquake and mud-rock flow. Wang Yu told me that when she and her friends went to record birdcalls, they came across a dust storm.
Wang Yu: (11 years old, Grade 5 of Qinglongqiao Primary School) When I was recording the sound of dust storm, I realized that dust storms happen because people still have not paid enough attention to environmental protection, and the environment and ecological balance are damaged. You can find it in my record.
[Sound of dust storm]
Host: There are some sounds of the nature we could never hear again. For example, the calls of Xinjiang Tiger, West Africa Lion, and Saiga. And some sounds are leaving us gradually.
Yang Ruiyuan: I think we couldn’t hear any sound of the nature. What we can hear are the noises made by cars, trains, airplanes and constructions. What I hate most is the noise of drilling, so unpleasant.
Xu Ke: I had planned to present you with sounds of tiger, bear or leopard, but I couldn’t find them. So I went to the zoo.
Yang Ruiyuan: I don’t like sounds of animals in the zoo. Their sounds are not natural because they have lost their true nature after being encaged in the zoo. Their sounds are fake.
Wu Zheng: I think we should let them go back to the nature, otherwise they will degrade.
Xu Ke: I think we should record all their sounds. If one day, all these animals disappear, we can broadcast their sounds to tell people how these animals call.
Yu Yiyang: I think we should first protect these animals from extinction. Only in this way, we may preserve their sounds for ever.
Liu Jing: Yes, you are right. Birds are just like human beings, they have their own world. They need our help and attention.
[Music rise… mixed sound...]
Host: Now let’s enjoy all the sounds of the nature recorded by our students.
[Acoustic effect, music composite...]
[Stream water … river water … waterfall … sea tide … thunder storm … insect … swan … flamingo … crow … bird cluster …pied magpie … bird …]
Host: Friends, do you like these sounds of the nature? Would you like to record the sounds of the nature to share with your classmates? What have you discovered in the recording activity? What is your experience and feeling? Would like to share it with me? Please call me at 65159036. I’m waiting to hear your sounds of the nature.
[Music fades out...]
